Well, when we talk about the benefits of solar energy over conventional energy, we see that its benefits are immense and that this alternate source of power is quite an amazing option. The term alternate energy basically refers to the unconventional systems of producing energy without the burning of fossil fuels and this method of energy production has a much lower harmful impact on the environment (if any). There are many energy systems that work without the use of fossil fuels; however the one which is in highest demand is a solar power system.

Solar energy systems are getting highly popular because of the multiple benefits of solar energy over conventional energy. Solar radiations cover quite an extensive spectrum of frequencies; it goes from infrared to the visible and up to the ultraviolet frequencies. The basic purpose of visible radiations is to provide us light and the infrared radiations provide us warmth.

The concept of using solar radiations for heating or warming purposes is quite ancient. However, the people were not aware of how to store such radiations. In recent times there have been great developments, now solar energy does not only cater to the needs of domestic heating but also for providing hot water and steam for industrial procedures as well. All of this is has become possible because of the invention of the photovoltaic cells; these cells are arranged in frames and are usually set in remote or open areas where there is no barrier between sunlight and the solar panel.

The benefits of solar energy over the conventional sources of energy include, firstly and most importantly solar power is quite affordable. The energy that you are converting to electricity through the solar panel is coming from sun and that energy is completely free. The only cost that you have to pay is the installation cost, which can be quite high (unless you are following the method mentioned later in the article) but it compensates and in fact lower your electricity bills. This would be a onetime cost unlike the electricity or gas bill that arrives on your doorstep every month. Only after a few years of installation you could see the difference and the money that has been saved. Plus another option that you could use is make solar panels yourself lowering the installation cost to a great deal (Check out the instructions on how to do it at http://gomakesolarpanels.com/).

Secondly, if you have solar power rather than conventional source of energy this means that you are actually cutting your electricity bills astonishingly, eventually saving a lot of money for many other requirements, wishes or wants that you have been killing all this time because they were never in your budget, well once you get solar power, after sometime you will have ample money to fulfill those dreams. You would actually be producing your own electricity and lead a life that does not depend on the grid for energy.

Thirdly, solar system does not need much of maintenance, thus saving your time and money that sometimes you have to invest on conventional energy systems. What’s more, you could even store this energy in backup batteries and they can be used in situations of crisis!

Fourthly, the most amazing benefit of solar power system in comparison to the conventional energy systems is that it is eco-friendly and non-polluting. It is eco-friendly because it is not causing even the slightest bit of global warming or any sort of climatic change, since no fuels are burned to produce this energy thus it is completely kind to the environment. It is non-polluting because no harmful by products are made and no poisonous gases are released.

Lastly, it is unlimited and resilient source of energy, unlike the conventional sources which include gas, coal and crude oil which will eventually run out because of the limited supply, however this source of energy will always be available and we get it in unlimited quantities from sun. It is resilient because almost all the solar panels that are available today can last more than twenty five years. This kills out the tension that what if it stops working after some time, but the best part is that these panels may work even longer than the time specified above.

So, in current situation installing a solar power system for your home or business is way more beneficial than the conventional sources of energy generation.

Heating your commercial greenhouse with natural gas or propane in winters is understandable as the excuse could be given that it is required to keep the business going, but this excuse cannot be given if you have a greenhouse in your house because you wanted to have one. The cost of fuel to keep it working would be exorbitant.

However there is an alternate for this problem which is active solar systems and one of the benefits of active solar energy is greenhouse heating. Basically in active solar energy you can store the solar energy in the back up batteries which can be used later on when the sun is not shining.

To begin with, a homemade greenhouse is typically a lot smaller than the commercial operation. This would make it quite a difficult task to maintain the heat levels as the doors are opened many times and even for longer time periods, destroying the whole concept of keeping a greenhouse. Secondly, mostly homemade greenhouses are made of a single layer of plastic film. Because of this little lagging is provided, so when the sun goes down in the evening the temperature would instantaneously fall down and match the outside temperature, even at maximum it would be only a degree or two warmer.

There can be days when you do not get any sunlight because of the cloudy or rainy weather, the plastic layer would only protect plants from snow, wind or rain but it would not help it keeping the temperature warm, in fact the temperature would get really low.

One way to tackle this problem can be active solar systems. One of the several benefits of active solar energy is that it would let you use the sun heating at day time and will store energy for nights and even on the days when there isn’t enough sunlight with the help of back up batteries.

One thing that you could do is put in the ground of greenhouse walkways and plant beds, hot water piping, and then you must allow hot water to pass through it with the help of one or more than one solar panels. This will warm the floor and will make the soil a thermal battery which would keep the temperature of the greenhouse high all through night, or on days when the sun is not shining.

Well, these are the reasons of using active solar energy; however there are other benefits of active solar energy it can be used for domestic purposes, or in the areas where the availability of electricity from grid is not regular. Plus one of the most important reasons of enhancing it would be to completely banish the use of burned fossil fuels to make electricity, since this is the most reasonably priced and perfectly environment friendly device.

If you think solar power is expensive then think again and have a look at how to make solar panels at home.

If you are searching a method for converting solar energy into electricity than we will not at all be surprised. A lot of individuals these days are searching for information on this topic due to the conventional electricity costs going out of hand.

Alright, let’s get the ball rolling and tell you about the actual process of converting solar energy into electricity.

A solar panel is made up of several solar cells which are also known as Photovoltaic cells, the acronym used for it is (PV). Basically photo means light and voltaic means electricity, these are the cells which convert sunlight directly to electricity. Solar cell functions according to the same principles which are used in any chemical battery or even electrical outlet. A solar panel is simply a bunch of these photovoltaic cells connected together and are properly packed up in a frame.

Solar panel functions by accumulating photons coming from the sun in the form of sunlight and convert them to direct current (DC) which is electrical power. This DC current is then converted into Alternating current (AC) by using an inverter; this is the type of current that is used in home appliances.

These photovoltaic cells are prepared of the same material that is used in the making of semiconductors which is silicon. If all the impurities are stripped off from silicon than it becomes the most ultimate substance for the transmission of electrons. When sunlight hits a photovoltaic cell it is immersed inside the silicon semiconductor. That immersed sunlight energy is transferred to semiconductor making the electrons go loose and flow freely.

The electric field within the PV cells makes the electrons flow in a particular direction. This flow is known as a current. Metal plates are arranged at the top and bottom of these photovoltaic cells this is what actually provides us the current for external use.

One of the most important considerations is the functioning of silicon as it plays the most important part in converting solar energy into electricity. Silicon has four electrons in its outer most shell, but it does have the capacity to carry eight electrons in the outermost shell. These four electrons are shared with surrounding silicon atoms making a strong and stable bond, which is also known as pure crystalline silicon.

When silicon is combined with any element that has five electrons like phosphorous, a negative charge is created. Since the outer shell can take only four electrons it leaves one behind which carries current. But if is combined with element that has only three electrons it would create a positive charge. Such differences in charges are used to use and convert sunlight to functional electricity in solar panels.

As photons come through the sunlight, the electrons from the combined material of phosphorous and silicon is pushed into the outer most shell. And from that outer most shell they are taken into the boron and silicon outer most shell. This is the whole process which takes place in a solar panel when it is converting solar energy into electricity.

Pre-made solar panels are expensive, but did you know you can produce affordable solar power on your own by making your own solar energy panels? Check out the step-by-step instructions on how to do it here.

In today’s world the concept of solar panels as the alternate for conventional electricity from electricity grids is getting quite popular. Even the governments are highly supporting this idea. Even the concept of do it yourself home solar power is gaining popularity pretty fast. Well, making solar panels to power your house with your own hands is not an easy job, but it is not that difficult if you have proper guidance. In fact you can become a pro after making a few of these solar panels at home.

Well, to make these first of all you need to get a solar module which is mounted on a strong steel frame and place on the roof or at a location that gets direct sunlight. The sunlight that hits this module is converted to direct current with the help of photovoltaic cells and then the direct current is converted to alternate current with the use of an inverter. After that the electrical power which has been made is transferred to the electric service panel from the inverter. This electric service panel is used for the distribution of the electrical power all around your house or your office.

Because of this, the meter of electricity will be turned backwards to create a credit with the power company so that the future usage is balanced. And you really do not have to worry as this technique is completely allowed by the State level electricity policy.

To produce do it yourself home solar power you really do not need special courses or talents, all you need is the ability to handle the basic system of wiring and usage of the tools with proper care and protective measures. All the materials that you will need in the making of the solar panel can be easily collected from the local ironmongers. The only material that would require some effort and search is the photovoltaic cells. This is great alternative that can be used to produce electricity as you can make it when it is easily possible for you rather than given hundreds of dollars at once for the installation.

However there is one misconception about making solar power yourself, many internet sites and a few guidelines suggest that solar panels can be made in less than two hundred dollars. And that it can lower your electricity bills by up to eighty percent. Well, both of these facts are hundred percent true but one thing that has been skipped or missed is the fact is that you can make one solar panel in less than a hundred dollars and to lower your bill by up to eighty percent you need to install several panels So those who have this misconception that they can lower their electricity bills by up to eighty percent only by investing two hundred dollars or even less are completely mistaken.

It is an intelligent idea to make these panels at home and produce do it yourself home solar power because it would save all those extra dollars that you would have to have to pay for installation cost. And plus this way you can keep on making solar panels whenever you get time and money. One important thing is to locate the right type of guideline book to make these panels. You can get them easily by doing a little survey or maybe ask some of your friends who have made solar panels themselves.

The only tricky part is the knowledge of how to connect all the parts together, this is the reason why you need a guide so badly, and it would be great idea if you request some of our friend who has made these before to supervise the first time you make the panel along with the guide, thus saving so much of money.

Ready to get the ball rolling and benefit from advantages of solar power? Check out step by step instructions on how to make solar panels here.

With the growing economic and environmental crisis that we’re facing nowadays like the decrease in the energy supply and the altering climates and global warming, many people are becoming wise on looking at alternatives to save energy and money. One of these alternatives is the use of solar panels and this article will provide you information on how to build your own solar panels and benefit from the various advantages of solar power.

Is Building Your Own Solar Panels A Good Idea?

When you build your own solar panels at home, these will help you more on your electricity bills because out of these panels you can create free energy. Not only will you save energy and money but using these can provide environmental benefits too.

Materials You Will Need:

Copper

Circular Plexiglas (12-inch wide)

Silicone caulk

Cork pieces

Stovetop

Tin snips

Compass (Mathematical)

Alligator wire clips

Salt

Hot water

Time To Start Building – Follow the Steps Below

1 – To build your own solar panels, set your compass to a 4-inch radius. Position the tip of one arm on the copper and continue tilting it while anticipating the drawing arm to touch the copper. Turn the compass to illustrate an 8-inch broad circle. Illustrate a second circle just like this and cut them equally by using tin snips.

2 – Place one copper circle on the stove burner. Heat it for about an hour and let it cool for half an hour. Check the copper circle color and normally it’s black. When it cools down, the black coating will peel-off but avoid from scrubbing it because that will destroy it’s oxidize form. Alternatively, for the other copper circle let it stay shiny and dirt-free.

3 – Place the two Plexiglas circles to a flat and dirt-free surface. You can buy pre-cut circles or incise them with glass-cutting diamond knife.

4 – Run a lean bead of silicone caulk approximately one-quarter inch starting from the frame of every copper circle.

5 – Push one circle on the center of every Plexiglas circle. Run a bead of caulk on the boundary of the shiny circle while sending-off about 2-inch notch near the top. Push the heated copper in the silicone while bonding the circles altogether. Make sure to scrutinize the edges for presence of holes. Close them with thin lines of caulk. Let everything in position for 24 hours.

6 – Affix an alligator clip wire to every copper circle near the 2-inch hole. Make a mixture of salt (3tbsp.) and hot water (1/2 cup) then pour it in the gap amid the copper sheets. Then, press on a cork piece in the hole to close it. Lay down the homemade solar panel with the heated copper in the sun and affix the alligator’s clips to a tiny ammeter to calculate the amount of electricity emission.

Although homemade solar panels in the past were not that highly refined as compared with the commercial ones, however now it is possible for you to build your own solar panels in such a way that it will work as efficiently as a commercially produced solar energy panel to achieve free energy to save money from electric bills.

Most of the homeowners upon receiving the utility bill each month wonder if there is any way in which they can save their hard earned money. If you too are an average homeowner and asked us this question a decade ago than we would have told you that it is just not possible. However, right now we would have to respond with a big emphatic YES! At the moment it is completely possible for any homeowner to make use of solar power and not just power a few electrical gadgets using it but the entire home.

The first step to going solar is actually determining how much your budget is. If you are ready to spend close to $15,000 than the best option for you to go solar would be to obtain solar do it yourself kits. These kits contains solar panels, wires, mounts for the roof and instructions on how to assemble solar panels on your own. This is a hassle free way to go solar and just by following the instructions to the tee you can have your own DIY solar power system setup.

If the price that we mentioned above that is needed for purchasing DIY solar power kits is too steep for you then all is not lost! You can still go make homemade solar powered energy a real possibility without burning a mighty hole in your pocket. At this point you may wonder how exactly that would be made possible. Well, the method that we are going to mention may sound a bit challenging (especially if you don’t have technical skills) but in reality its super easy! This is what you got to do – Instead of buying solar panels or purchasing DIY kits from the market you are going to make these solar panels on your own. Yes, you read it right!

Although following this procedure to benefit from the various advantages of solar power would take some efforts on your part but in the end the final product will be something that you will be proud of and in the end it is going to be something that is going to save a considerable amount of money in the long run.

In Mr. Suresh’s case it could well be the situation of an owners pride and neighbors envy. Mr. Suresh, who is a resident of Kilpauk (a small township in Madras, India), installed solar panels recently and this is something that has helped him keep his head cool despite of the frequent power cuts that frustrate his neighbors. The solar panels that are glimmering on top of this home in bright sunshine are powering his home through freely generated electricity.

The solar power system installed in his home is capable of producing 1 kilowatt of energy and was installed a few months ago. Mr. Suresh emphatically reported that since the time he has got these panels installed he has got power in his home at all times and is not affected by power cuts, he also stated that his electric bills have been slashed drastically.

The 1 KW solar energy plant in Mr. Kumar’s home has got 10 solar power panels. An inverter that is used to charge 10 batteries. The inverter during the day when solar panels are producing energy distributes the energy for charging the batteries and a part of it is used to power the electrical appliances in the home. During the day, no power is drawn from the batteries as solar panels are directly supplying the produced energy for utilization. Its only during night that power is drawn for the battery bank that has been put in place. The solar power system in his home has been setup in such a way that it does not supply power to appliances that require a huge amount of energy for operation.

Mr. Kumar said that he was motivated to install these panels in his home because of the frequent power cuts, the wonderful ability of solar panels to convert solar energy into electricity, as well as other advantages of solar power.

He said that the money that he had to spend to get these panels installed was close to 170 thousand Indian Rupees (approximately 3400 USD according to today’s FX rates). He was also provided a subsidy of 80,000 INR (approx 1600 USD) by his state energy development agency.

We would like to congratulate Mr. Suresh on making the smart choice of choosing an alternative, renewable source of power that will continue to power his home for decades using free energy that sun provides us with.

Energy plays a crucial role in helping us improve our way of life. Recently there have been plenty of discussions both for and against renewable energy as well as non-renewable energy. The advantages and disadvantages of both these forms of energy are given later in the article, but one this clear for sure that we have got so used to energy that helps us make our everyday life easier that we simply cannot imagine a life without it.

We will start the ball rolling by looking at non-renewable sources of power generation.

As their name suggests non-renewable energy is produced by making use of non-renewable components, which means they can’t be used over and over again for producing energy. Typical sources of non-renewable energy are coal and oil.

The major benefit that people advocating use of non-renewable energy point out to is their easy availability. Coal and oil is mined, it is cheap as a result the energy produced by them is cost effective (at least that’s what they think, but the truth is far from that!)

The major disadvantage related to the use of non-renewable sources of energy is that it is actually “non-renewable”! Once such source of energy is finished, it’s gone forever. Given the rate of our energy consumption, it won’t be long before non-renewable reserves of energy exhaust.

Referring to renewable power now.

Renewable power is energy that is generated using natural sources for example sunlight, wind, rain etc, that are renewable (naturally replenished).

The major advantage of using this form of energy generation is that it does not pollute the environment and is renewable. Also, production of energy using renewable sources of generation can start at small scale.

A while back, the expense related to installation of renewable energy systems used to be a bit of an issue, however due to increase in demand their cost has fallen considerably in past few years.

Judging from the points put forward above, both in favor and against non-renewable and non-renewable energy, it can be safely deduced that non renewable sources of energy will not last forever and in the future making use of renewable sources of energy will not only be an alternate option to get power but will become a necessity for all of us.

There has been a substantial rise in demand for renewable energy such as solar power, owing to power and gas outages and high tariffs which besides negatively affecting commercial activities have also upset the monthly budgets of families.

As reported by The Express Tribune (first internationally affiliated newspaper in Pakistan), solar panel importers in the country told that that unbearable power blackouts, high charges and hefty expenditures on Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) and power generators had left consumers without any choice but to turn to renewable power, especially solar power panels. These importers also said that solar panels imported from China were more affordable compared to panels imported from European nations such as Germany. The Government of Pakistan in an attempt to encourage alternative power generation has removed any duty on import of solar power systems.

Tariq Nurani, the chairman of Nurani Solar Pvt. Ltd. said that compared to 2010 the sales of solar power panels have increased about 40%. Mr. Nurani further said that converting solar energy into electricity is an easy task and most regions in Pakistan on average receive close to 10 hours of sunlight a day, which is ample enough to generate 1000 watts of energy/square meter.

The CEO of Khawaja Cotton Industries (based in Faisalabad, Pakistan) Muhammad Amjad Khawaja stated that he invested 5 million PKR (Pakistani Rupee) (which approximately equals to $55,000) for installation of solar water boilers, however after he did it he noticed a forty percent decrease in gas bills. Mr. Khawaja also installed solar panels at his residence investing PKR 90,000 (approximately $994) and had his electric bills cut by almost 60%.

After having experience the benefits of solar energy, Mr. Khawaja said power outages and rising electricity tariffs had harmed the textile sector greatly and solar water boilers helped fix the issue immensely.

Another solar power consumer Rizvi said “Although the panel was costly for me, but my electricity bill was cut down by 60% or so and these savings will help me easily recover the money”

Bilal Ahmad, another person using solar power said that solar panels, particularly compact panels, are very much affordable and would even cost you less money than what is spent of a power generator or UPS.

While he was using a UPS he noticed his electric bill went up at least 40% because of power needed to charge batteries. Now since he is using energy derived from his solar panels he can expect to save a considerable amount of money for years to come.

Taking inspiration from the stories of Mr. Khawaja, Rizvi and Ahmad, if you want to utilize solar energy for power production then you will be glad to know that you can easily convert solar energy into electricity on your own for a fraction of the retail cost of solar panels.

Do you find yourself pondering whether solar energy is right to suit your needs or not? It’s not just you. There is plenty of information available on the internet on the topic of solar power panels; however most of it is difficult to understand. In an attempt to make things uncomplicated we have gone searching for the most general frequently asked questions (FAQs) about these solar panels. And listed below are a few of them.

How much electricity can be generated by a solar panel?

The amount of electricity that a solar panel can produce depends on its size and the actual power output can vary from just some watts to several hundred. Fundamentally, the quantity of electricity generated is in direct proportion to solar panel’s size. To put it differently, the larger the solar panel the greater the power production.

In which direction should the solar panels face?

To maximize the energy production potential of solar panels they should face in the direction where they can receive maximum sunlight. Locations in northern hemisphere should have solar panels facing south and locations in southern hemisphere should have solar panels facing north direction. In some cases it is not possible to meet this criterion, the solar panels can still utilized to produce electricity (however the energy output will be lower).

What kind of electrical energy is produced by solar panels?

Energy produced by solar panels is in the form of direct current (DC). Although, there are appliances that can be directly operated using this energy without any conversion. However, most of the common electric powered home appliances need energy in the form of alternating current (AC), for this purpose an inverter is used to convert direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC).

Can solar panels be utilized in places that do not get a lot of sunshine?

Absolutely yes. Not all of us live in a region which gets a lot of sun, and even people that do might not have the perfect (i.e. clear, unobstructed) spot to install the solar panels. Solar panels installed in “not-so-ideal” conditions will generate energy however in lesser quantities. Nevertheless, there are ways by which we can overcome these drawbacks, one is to install more or larger panels and other is to cut down on our energy consumption.

What is the average lifespan of solar panels?

The lifespan of solar panels rely a bit on how it is set up; a solar panel which gets relocated quite a lot (such as the ones used in a portable device) is much more at risk of deterioration than one which is fixed at one location. But generally solar panels can be expected to last more than 25 years.

How can I determine how much energy I will require to power my house?

The most easy way to determine your energy requirement without making things tricky is to have a look at your past energy bills. Your electric power consumption will be given there – commonly in kw (kilowatts).

What kind of money can one save by making a switch to solar powered energy?

Although there is no totally precise approach to find an exact figure since it relies on a lot of factors, but we will let you know about the most typical ways in which you will save money by switching to solar energy.

Before anything you should evaluate how much will it cost to purchase the solar panels and have them installed (or else if you are making the solar panels on your own take into consideration the amount you will spend to buy the components). Once these solar panels are installed you’ll start to recover your initial investment. How fast you’ll recover your expenses depends on how much power your solar panels produce and how much energy is drawn from the grid. For example, if half of your total energy needs are fulfilled from the power produced by solar panels, then your electric bill will be cut by 50%.

Also going by the current trends, utility rates will continue to increase in future and there is a very good chance you’ll save much more in the future in comparison with what you do initially.

Do solar panels need a lot of maintenance?

No. Other than routine cleaning of panels to keep the surface clean of dust or anything else that prevents sunlight from getting to the panel, there is not a lot you need to do to keep them in good shape.

Can you really make your own solar panels or do you have to purchase them?

It entirely depends on you. While solar panels sold commercially cost a lot of money, it is possible to make your own solar panels for a fraction of the retail cost. Small solar panels are easy to make, but with the help of right guidance it is possible to make large panels that can power your entire home using solar power.
